Week 7 - Realization and Personal Values

Empower 360 Session Notes | Week 7

This was a rich and emotionally resonant session. Chris and Braden moved through values clarification, identity work, and grief processing, with the thread of authentic belonging running underneath nearly every topic.

Opening / Check-In

Chris checked in with low energy around the job search but notably arrived with some real wins from the week: he had worked through shredding and box sorting without forcing it or burning out early. No signs of pre-burnout activation were present. His affect was reflective and open, which set a strong foundation for the deeper work that followed.

Content Covered

The session focused on values as a motivation system, particularly how the ADHD brain runs on interest, challenge, urgency, and passion rather than willpower or obligation. From there, the conversation shifted toward identity, grief, and what it looks like to find meaningful work after losing something that felt like a calling.

Key concepts explored:

  • ADHD as an interest-based nervous system — motivation follows alignment, not discipline

  • Values as an anchor — when life decisions connect to core values, internal stability follows; when they don't, burnout and avoidance follow

  • Alignment as an ongoing process — not a destination, but a continuous recalibration as life changes

  • Small experiments as information — trying something doesn't require it to succeed; it just needs to teach something

  • Masking and its cost — physical and emotional energy drain when authentic presentation isn't safe

  • Identity beyond a role — separating the value of making a difference from the specific context where that value was previously expressed

Frameworks touched: W (We and Connection) around community and belonging; E (Esteem and Self-Trust) around identity, imposter syndrome, and authentic self-presentation; R (Realization and Growth) around grief, forward movement, and legacy.

Session Exploration Highlights

A strong theme emerged early: how much identity can become fused with a specific role, and how disorienting it is when that role ends. The conversation around Chris's NASA work opened into something broader about purpose, grief, and what it means to carry meaningful work forward into a different context.

The ADHD conference community surfaced as a powerful example of a "third place" where masking is unnecessary and belonging feels immediate. The shared experience of environments that accommodate rather than demand conformity resonated on multiple levels, tying back directly to why values alignment matters so much for neurodivergent people.

The idea of comparison and how it quietly drains energy also came up organically. Reflecting on who we compare ourselves to, and what that comparison costs, became a meaningful closing thread for the session.

Notable Individual Moments

  • C. revealed that he is quoted on page 49 of Caroline Maguire's newly released book, in a passage about community and not wanting to be a bother. He appeared moved by this.

  • C. described a powerful emotional moment at a past conference during Brendan Mahan's debrief when Caroline
Maguire introduced herself. He connected deeply to the experience of finally feeling seen and like he belonged.

  • B. shared his own nonlinear path through art school, IT burnout, and finding coaching as a way of modeling that alignment is rarely a straight line.

  • [B] Follow up on D&D character sheet and items from DM -- Due: Before Tomorrow's Session
